SOLON — At the sound of a whistle archers from junior high (middle school) through high school got up, walked to racks where their bows were carefully hung, then proceeded to a line of quivers. Following another signal, they placed arrows in their bows, aimed, and launched them at their target. Signals and seemingly synchronized movements directed their actions, including scoring the hits and returning to their seats.
Such was the sight Saturday; Dec. 9 as the Solon Spartan Archery Team hosted a mini tournament at the Solon Middle School. Prairie, Cedar Rapids and Mount Vernon’s teams joined Solon as a warm-up to the regular season, and an opportunity for new archers to gain valuable experience. A total of 292 archers participated in the event with Prairie taking first place in high school competition while Mount Vernon won the middle school contest. Solon took second place in both categories.
