November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and we’re joining the fun. Whether you’ve been an aspiring novelist for ages, or you’re tempted to give it a shot, save the dates and join us for NaNoWriMo! Each Monday evening in November we’re hosting generative writing workshops with other writers. Robert Peck and Taney Kurth, Rhetoric and English University professors and writing center instructors, will lead these workshops and provide support for anyone wanting to write this month. Our first session on Monday, November 6 at 6:30 p.m. will be focused on Your Story Begins: Zeroing in Early Sets You Apart. If you can’t join us in person, visit our website calendar event for a Zoom link. We’d love to have you join the NaNoWriMo fun!

What’s New?
We can learn through information with these (and many more) nonfiction books that are new to our shelves!
The Co-Parenting Handbook by Karen Bonnell and Kristin Little. This handbook helps parents confidently take on the challenges of raising children in two homes. Addressing the emotional impact of separation, conflict, grief, and recovery, the authors skillfully provide a road map for all family members to safely navigate through separation/divorce. Parents will discover how to move from angry, hurt partners to constructive, successful co-parents.
How to Survive History by Cody Cassidy. A practical guide to surviving history’s most challenging threats, from outrunning dinosaurs to making it off the Titanic alive. History is the most dangerous place on earth. From dinosaurs the size of locomotives to meteors big enough to sterilize the planet, from famines to pandemics, from tornadoes to the Chicxulub asteroid, the odds of human survival are slim but not zero–at least, not if you know where to go and what to do.
Rosie the Riveters of Iowa by Linda Betsinger McCann. ‘Rosie the Riveter’ was a nickname given to women who worked in factories during World War II. Nationwide, hundreds of factories were converted from their normal production into making something for the war effort. The men had gone to fight the war, so the women stepped up and worked in the factories. They not only worked as riveters, but also welders, drill-press and lathe operators, inspectors, and especially anything dealing with small parts. Over one hundred factories in Iowa hired women to turn out items for the war. This book includes more than twenty personal remembrances from these Iowa Rosies.
The Unwinding and Other Dreamings by Jackie Morris. This book is not meant to be read from cover to cover. It is a book for dreamers. Slight of word, rich of image, its purpose is to ease the soul. The paintings between these covers were worked on in the between times, an Unwinding of the soul, when the pressures of work were too much. Dreams and wishes are the inspiration at times like this.
