SOLON — Senior Night was held Tuesday, October 3 as Britta Elijah and Brynn Deike were recognized for their contributions to the Lady Spartan volleyball program, and a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) sweep of the Independence (Indee) Mustangs only made it sweeter.
Yasmine Sell led all with 17 kills and four blocks with ten kills and three blocks by Grace Erwin. Deike had one kill, 12 assists, and two blocks.
The ladies went 3-3 Saturday, October 7 at Center Point-Urbana’s tournament with 2-1 (22-24, 21-19, 15-12) and 2-0 (25-14, 25-20) wins over Waterloo West and Clinton, and 2-0 (16-21, 11-21) and 2-0 (19-21, 15-21) losses to Columbus Catholic (Waterloo) and Assumption Catholic (Davenport). In the consolation brackets, Solon defeated Clinton again 2-0 (25-14, 25-20) but fell 2-1 (25-22, 20-25, 6-15) to Waterloo West.
No changes in IGHSAU rankings
The Lady Spartans kept their No. 11 spot in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s (IGHSAU) weekly rankings issued Wednesday, October 4. Western Christian, Mount Vernon, Des Moines Christian, Assumption Catholic (Davenport), and Cherokee stayed No. 1 -No. 5. Center Point-Urbana remained at No. 9 with West Delaware staying at No. 10.
Solon opens postseason at home
Regional volleyball brackets were released Thursday, October 5 with Solon in Class 3A Region 8.
Solon hosts Central Lee as Tipton hosts Mediapolis Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. Assumption (ranked No. 4) hosts Washington while Fairfield and Davis County tangle in Fairfield.
Winners will play Thursday, October 19 at Assumption and Solon while the Regional Final will be Tuesday, October 24 at the highest-ranked team’s site.
“We are looking forward to competing against these teams,” said Coach Mikayla Siddell. “We are hoping to make it past the third round this year. We are fortunate to have seen Davenport Assumption a couple times this season, so if it ends up being the two of us, we will have a good battle for a road to state.”
