IOWA CITY — The City High girls swimming and diving team fell 107-73 (junior varsity) and 127-56 (varsity) to Iowa City West High-Liberty High Tuesday, Sept. 26 in the annual crosstown rivalry meet.
Grace Hoeper, Solon junior and City High standout, won the varsity 200-yard individual medley (IM) and 100-yard butterfly events in 2:10.63 and 56.82 while freshman Madelyn Elkins won the JV 100-yard freestyle in 1:04.52.
Seniors Tatum Holtkamp and Avery Mann took second place in the JV 50 freestyle (Holtkamp, 28.94) and varsity 500 freestyle (Mann, 5:51.41). Holtkamp was fifth in the varsity 100 breaststroke in 1:21.17, Mann was fifth in the varsity 50 freestyle (28.52), senior Claire Leone was fourth in the JV 100 breaststroke (1:36.32) and fifth in the JV 100 fly (1:34.84), senior Ella Vernon was fifth in the varsity 200 freestyle, and Elkins was sixth in the varsity 200 IM (2:49.14).
Senior Taryn Anderson and sophomore Paige Anderson competed in the 1-meter JV diving competition with Taryn compiling 40.85 points and 18.20 for Paige.
JV 200 freestyle relay wins
City’s Elsie Gavin, Mira Cumming, and Adeliade Newton, with Ella Vernon anchoring, won the JV 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:00.96. City’s Ily Jessen, Malorie James, and Keira James, with Leone in the second spot, were fifth in 2:24.01 while Taryn and Paige Anderson bookended City’s Anne Clifton and Calista Cahill for a 2:51.42 finish.
Jessen, Leone, and City’s Mabel Wittenkeller and Lolita Hurlbutt were fourth in the JV 200 medley relay (2:27.96) and Newton, Vernon, Kate Bird, and Holtkamp took second in the JV 400 freestyle (4:22.79).
Hoeper anchored the second-place varsity 200 freestyle with City’s Saoirse Miller, Margalit Frank, and Elsa Farber (1:46.55), Elkins, Celeste Miller, Kalea Seaton, and Eliza Mitchell were fifth (1:55.28). Hoeper also anchored the second-place 400 freestyle with Frank, Farber, and Saoirse Miller (3:57.68), Holtkamp, Mann, and Elkins were joined by City’s Ellie Galloway for the third-place 200 medley relay (2:09.03), and Mann led off for the fifth place 400 freestyle with Seaton, Galloway, and Celeste Miller (4:16.12).
Little Hawks are seeing progress
Coach Mandi Kowal pointed to a series of highlights on the night: 35 personal records (PR), 96 swims faster than last year, five races won (against West-Liberty) vs. two last year, eight races ended with a second-place finish vs. six last year, and City High swimmers finished third eleven times vs. four last year.
Upcoming events
City High visits Dubuque Hempstead Thursday, October 19 for the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) varsity meet with Dubuque Senior, West High-Liberty High, CR Jefferson, CR Kennedy, Linn-Mar, Wahlert Catholic, CR Washington, and the Waterloo East-Waterloo West squad starting at 5:00 p.m.
The MVC meet continues Saturday, October 21 at noon.
