SOLON — The varsity Lady Spartans notched two significant wins this past week as they knocked off WaMaC foe Center Point-Urbana and Xavier Catholic (Cedar Rapids), both in five-set marathons. Solon moved to No. 8 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s (IGHSAU) weekly rankings for Class 3A, up from No. 12 the week prior.
Solon 3 CPU 2
Solon outlasted the Stormin’ Pointers after winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-19 but dropping the third and fourth 17-25 and 17-25. The Lady Spartans took the fifth set 15-13. CPU’s Sydney Maue led all with 21 kills on the night while Yasmine Sell led Solon with ten. Grace Erwin and Gable Knight produced eight, Brynn Deike made seven, and Jozie Lahr and Addie Miller had six each.
Erwin led defensively with nine solo blocks, Lahr made four, Sell and Miller produced three each with one apiece from Deike and Knight. Kennedey Whitford made 40 digs with 21 by Sell, 15 from Lauryn Wear, 14 by Deike, seven each from Miller and Knight, and four from Lahr.
Sell made a pair of ace serves with one apiece by Deike and Whitford.
The Pointers, who entered the IGHSAU 3A rankings Sept. 7 in the No. 6 spot dropped to No. 9.
Solon 3, Xavier Catholic 2
The Saints came to Solon ranked No. 4 in Class 4A (IGHSAU Sept. 7 rankings) and hammered the Lady Spartans 25-16 in the first set. But Coach Mikayla Long’s crew reset and took game two 26-24 before pounding Xavier 25-13 in the third. The Saints tied the match 2-2 with a 25-21 fourth set win ahead of a 15-9 win by Solon in the fifth for the victory.
The Saints retained their No. 4 spot in the IGHSAU’s Sept. 14 rankings.
Stats were not available as of Sunday, Sept. 17.
Solon falls to Senior
The Lady Spartans travelled to Clinton Saturday, Sept. 16 for the River Queens’ varsity tournament and fell 2-1 (13-21, 4-13) to Dubuque Senior.
Upcoming events
West Delaware visits Tuesday, Sept. 26 for Senior Night. Freshmen and JV start at 5:00 p.m. with sophomores at 6:00 and varsity at 7:30 p.m. Solon travels to Independence Tuesday, October 3 and will compete in Center Point-Urbana’s tournament Saturday, October 7 starting at 8:30 a.m. The WaMaC Tournament is set for Thursday, October 12 at Marion High School starting at 4:00 p.m. ahead of postseason play, which begins Tuesday, October 17, continues Thursday, October 19, and ends with the Regional Final Tuesday, October 24 with a trip to State on the line.
