Members of Scout Troop 120 held a campout this past weekend at Lake Macbride’s Primitive Campsite Youth Site. Activities included canoeing from the campsite to the Sailboat Ramp, preparing a trail lunch, and canoeing back to the campsite.
“Canoeing, like many activities in scouting, create the opportunity for planning, unpredictability, frustration, teamwork, correction, and ultimately success. It’s fun to watch scouts over the years transition from the learner to the teacher,” said Scoutmaster Kelsey Bumsted. “With the EDGE (Educate-Demonstrate-Guide-Enable) method as our crutch, no matter if we are canoeing, backpacking, cooking, hiking, just tying down our rain fly the EDGE method is ever present in the short and long term.”
The event was also the debut of a pair of new utility/canoe trailers the troop recently acquired, which replace an older and larger trailer. The new trailers were funded by Timothy Beranek (initial donation), the Solon Beef Days Committee (major donor), and Denny Hansen. Keith Hemann, owner of Hawkeye Weld & Repair (Iowa City), and his crew fabricated removable canoe racks, which provide greater flexibility in the trailers’ use.
