CEDAR RAPIDS — Eight Solon student athletes (Grace Hoeper, Tatum Holtkamp, Claire Leone, Avery Mann, Ella Vernon, Madelyn Elkins, Taryn Anderson, and Paige Anderson) are swimming with the Iowa City High Little Hawks this season, and Tuesday, Sept. 12 the combined team earned their first dual meet win of the season at Cedar Rapids Washington High School. The varsity Little Hawks dunked the Warriors 107-63 and the JV squad splashed Wash 120-18.
Hoeper, a junior, won the 200-yard individual medley (IM) in 2:09.21, the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.33, and anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay with Saoirse Miller, Elkins, and Celeste Miller in 1:50.11. Hoeper had the top times in the state (as of Sunday, Sept. 17) in the 50 freestyle (23.44), 200 freestyle (1:53.09), and 100 butterfly (57.20). She was No.2 in the state in the 100 freestyle (52.08), 500 freestyle (5:06.33), and the 200 IM (2:09.21).
Holtkamp, a senior, won the JV 50-yard freestyle in 30.02 and swam the second leg of the third place 200-yard varsity medley relay with Celeste Miller and Vidya Kumar, and Elkins (2:15.04). She also swam the third leg of the second place JV 200-yard freestyle with Riley Polfliet, Audrey Sexton, and Kumar (2:04.78).
Leone, a senior, swam the second leg of the second place JV 200-yard medley relay with Kate Bird, Lolita Hurlbutt, and Keira James (2:29.77), took second in the JV 100 yard butterfly (1:30.97), and swam the second leg of the third place JV 200 freestyle relay with Mabel Wittenkeller, Malorie James, and Ily Jensen (2:19.28), and the third place JV 400 freestyle relay with Austin Hendershot, James, and Larkin Brown (5:49.12).
Elkins, a freshman, was fourth in the 200 IM (2:47.18) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:16.70).
Taryn Anderson, a senior, accrued 40.40 points in the JV 1-meter dive.
Mann, a senior, was second in the 50 freestyle (29.37) and the 100 butterfly (1:16.70) and swam the second leg of the third place 200 freestyle relay with Elsa Farber, Ellie Galloway, and Margalit Frank (1:53.12) as well as the winning 400 freestyle relay with Farber, Galloway, and Saoirse Miller (4:14.73).
Little Hawks sixth at home
Iowa City West High topped the six-team field in the Little Hawk Relays Saturday, Sept. 16 with 435 team points. Ankeny (350), Pleasant Valley (348), Waukee (341), and Bettendorf (298) took the second-through-fifth spots in points with City High finishing sixth with 146.

The Little Hawks take on crosstown rival Iowa City West High/Liberty High’s Trojan-Bolts Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center in Iowa City. City travels to Holmes Jr. High School in Cedar Falls Tuesday, October 3 for a 6:00 p.m. dual meet with Cedar Falls.
