Gary Bentrim
Gary Wayne Bentrim, a beloved member of the Solon community, passed away Sept. 4, 2023.
He was born May 20, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert and Lillian (Ryan) Bentrim. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and love. A Celebration of Life gathering was held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, located at 1749 Racine Avenue NE, Solon. Private family inurnment will be at a later date. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Gary achieved greatness in wrestling during his high school and collegiate years. As a Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk, he was a state title winner his senior year. Following that he earned recognition as a three-time NCAA Division II individual national champion for the University of Northern Iowa Wrestling. His contributions to the NCAA championship teams in 1975 and 1978 showcased his unwavering determination and skill. He was inducted into the Jefferson High School, Iowa High School Athletics, University of Northern Iowa, NCAA Division II and Glen Brand Wrestling Halls of Fame.
On Dec. 18, 1982, Gary married the love of his life, Denise, cementing their bond. Their love story intertwined with Solon as Gary embraced the community that had become a part of his heart through Denise. Together, they decided to make Solon their home, where they would raise their beautiful family.
Gary and Denise were blessed with three children: Jennifer (Dan) Bauer, residing in Dubuque, Ryan Bentrim, who lives in Solon and Tiffany (Brandon) Clemens, who live in Minneapolis; his grandchildren Becca (Alex) Menster and Brady Slaton (Camryn); one great-grandson Lennon Menster; his sister Alanda Bentrim of Cedar Rapids; his brother Charlie Bentrim of Cedar Rapids; his mother-in-law Marie Beuter of Mesa, Ariz.; his brother-in-law Jon (Cheryl) Beuter of Cedar Falls; as well as his many nieces and nephews. Gary’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Bob Jr., and Terry Bentrim, his father-in-law Leo Beuter and brother-in-law Brad Beuter.
Gary’s dedication to the community extended beyond his family. Over 21 years, he served as president, tirelessly working to transform Solon Beef Days into the premier community event in the area. His passion and commitment left an indelible mark on the community, bringing people together to celebrate the spirit of Solon.
Gary Bentrim will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but also for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering commitment to those he loved and the community he cherished. He leaves behind a legacy of love, family and community that will continue to thrive.
