SOLON — The Spartans improved to 1-1 as they rebounded from a season opening loss to Assumption Catholic with a 7-3 home win Friday, Sept. 1 against WaMaC West rival Clear Creek Amana (CCA).
Barret Schade, a senior running back, scored on a one-yard run on the Spartans’ second drive of the game for an early 6-0 lead. The first drive went three-and-out, and the second appeared similarly doomed but junior quarterback Ty Bell completed a short pass to senior wide receiver Grant Knipper, who darted 57 yards to the Clippers’ eight-yard line. Schade made the short dash to score on third and goal. Knipper booted the PAT kick to make it 7-0.
Solon’s defense held the Clippers to just a 21-yard field goal, booted by Carson Cecak with 1:41 left in the first half.
Bell completed eight of thirteen passes for 91 yards with no interceptions. Schade made nine carries for 33 yards, seniors Milo Ashbacker and Brayden Moore had seven carries each with 39 yards for Moore and 18 for Ashbacker while juniors Eddie Johnson and Cole Carney made one carry each with 18 yards for Carney and one yard for Johnson. Senior Nash Kotar and Johnson made two receptions each with 11 yards for Kotar and seven for Johnson. Seniors Jack McCarty, Cole Farnsworth, Knipper, and junior Oliver Owens had one reception apiece with 57 yards for Knipper, eight for Farnsworth, six for Owens, and two for McCarty, who had two kick returns for 49 yards and one six-yard punt return.
Moore led the defense with nine tackles (seven solo), senior Brett White had eight (five solo), McCarty had four (three solo), Johnson and senior Mason Scott were credited with 3.5 (three solos for Johnson, two for Scott including a quarterback sack), while Schade and Kotar produced three apiece with two solos each. Senior Austin Knight and Owens had two tackles each with one solo apiece, Carney made 1.5 tackles with one solo, senior Trevor Myers and sophomore Conlan Poynton had one tackle each (both solos), while seniors Ben Kampman, Marcus Richard, and Davin Walker received credit for a half-tackle each.
