MARION — Iowa City High’s Little Hawks girls swimming and diving team fell 102-83 to Linn-Mar Tuesday, August 29 in Marion.
“I’m proud of the team working through illnesses and missing some people,” said City coach Mandi Kowal. The Little Hawks, with eight Solon girls, posted one junior varsity win as Solon’s Madelyn Elkins took the 200-yard individual medley (IM) in 2:48.60; and four varsity wins, all associated with Solon’s Grace Hoeper. Hoeper set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle with her win in 1:53.09 and won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.20. Hoeper helped secure victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay with City’s Saoirse Miller, Margalit Frank, and Elsa Farber as she swam the anchor leg coming from behind and posting her fastest relay split with City High (23.20) for a 1:44.72 final. She also anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with City’s Elsa Farber, Miller, and Frank with a 3:53.65 final.
Varsity highlights
Elkins and Solon’s Tatum Holtkamp teamed up with City’s Celeste Miller and Keira James for a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:01.08), Holtkamp, Avery Mann, and Elkins (with City’s Celeste Miller) took third in the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.47, while Ella Vernon and Mann joined City’s Kate Bird and Miriam Doval for a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:29.37).
Holtkamp was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:27.61), Vernon was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:26.85) and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:07.00), while Mann was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (29.20) and second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:57.31).
JV highlights
Claire Leone anchored the second place 200-yard medley relay with City’s Ily Jensen, Austin Hendershot, and Larkin Brown (2:46.18) and was third in the 200 IM (3:21.83) and breaststroke (1:39.71). Leone joined City’s Adel Cilek, Malorie James, and Eliza Mitchell for the fourth place 200 freestyle relay (2:17.75). Vernon anchored the third place 200 freestyle relay with City’s Mabel Wittenkeller, Doval, and Vidya Kumar (2:07.00), Elkins was second in the butterfly (1:29.69), and Holtkamp was third in the 100 freestyle (1:09.80). Taryn and Paige Anderson competed in 1-meter diving (8.40 and 7.70).

The Little Hawks travel to Loras College Tuesday, Sept. 19 to face Wahlert Catholic at 6:00 p.m. The annual crosstown rivalry meet between City and Iowa City West High/Liberty High will be Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Mercer Park starting at 6:00 p.m.
