SOLON — Voters will go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 7 for the 2023 City and School Election to elect the Mayor, two city councilmembers, and two school board members.
Mayor Steve Stange’s term expires this year. Stange joined the City Council in 2006 and served as Mayor Pro Tem. He was appointed by the Council as Mayor in May 2014 to fill the vacated position. He was reelected in 2015 and 2019 to four-year terms.
Councilmen Dan O’Neil and John Farlinger’s terms are also expiring this year after having been elected in 2019. Farlinger was appointed Mayor Pro Tem in April 2022.
On the school board, Jami Wolf and Adam Haluska’s four-year terms are expiring.
Wolf was elected in 2019 while Haluska joined the Board in 2015.
Candidate information
The filing period for candidates opened Monday, August 28 and runs until 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21. Details for filing can be found at www. johnsoncountyiowa.gov/november-7-2023-city-and-school-election. The Johnson County Auditor’s Office oversees elections and will post school board candidates on their website, www.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-auditor Sept. 22 as districts deliver candidates’ paperwork to the Auditor’s Office.
Election information and important dates
Tuesday, August 29 — First day to request a mailed absentee ballot.
Monday, Sept. 4 – Labor Day, Auditor’s Office will be closed.
Monday, October 9 – 5:00 p.m. deadline to file citizen petitions requesting a satellite absentee voting station. Petitions require 100 signatures of eligible electors. Contact the Auditor’s Office (319-356-6004) for more information on the process.
Wednesday, October 18 – First day in-person early voting is allowed under state law. Details on when early voting will begin will be posted by the Auditor’s Office closer to the election.
Monday, October 23 – Voter pre-registration deadline. If you need to register in Johnson County or update your address after this date, you will need to follow Election Day Registration procedures, which can be found at https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/voterinformation/edr.html, in order to be able to vote in this election.
Monday, October 23 – 5:00 p.m. deadline to request a mailed absentee ballot. The Auditor’s Office must have your Absentee Ballot Request form (information available at https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/abentee-ballot-request-form-instructions) by 5:00 p.m. In-person early voting will still be available after this date.
Monday, Nov. 6 – Last day of in-person voting.
Tuesday, Nov. 7 – Election Day. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Voters must vote at their assigned polling place, which can be found at https://gis.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/pollingplaces/.
