This month the Solon Book Club is reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jump-start her career. Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late ‘80s and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds — revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love — Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways. Written with Reid’s signature talent for “creating complex, likable characters” (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means — and what it takes — to face the truth. Pick up a copy of the book at the Library and join us on Tuesday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss.

What We’re Reading
“FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT… except, she’s really not. The new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head.
When Finlay’s overheard discussing the plot of her new novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet…and she soon discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart.” — from the publisher.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano is the perfect mix of murder mystery, comedy, modern family drama, and friendships. Many of us at the Library have enjoyed the audiobook available through Bridges or the Libby app and continue enjoying the series with books two and three with a fourth to come out next year! You can check out the first book of the series in the Library, as well. Readers who have enjoyed the antics of Stephanie Plum in author Janet Evanovich’s long running series are sure to enjoy this novel by Cosimano.
