SOLON — The varsity softball team hit a bump in the road last week as they were swept by the WaMaC West’s Williamsburg Raiders (No. 1 in Class 3A in the IGHSAA’s June 8 rankings) on the road and fell to Regina Catholic (No. 1 in Class 2A in the June 8 rankings) in a non-conference game. Losses also came at the Roland-Story Kiwanis Softball Tournament as the Lady Spartans dipped to 12-8 overall but remained at 9-3 in the WaMaC East, second to No. 1 Mount Vernon (10-2/18-5).
Raiders sweep Solon 10-2 and 2-0
Solon travelled to Williamsburg Monday, June 12 for a WaMaC East vs. West contest and were swept by the Raiders.
Four Raiders scored in the bottom of the first inning in game one followed by two more in the third, two in the fourth, and one run each in the fifth and sixth. Hilary Wilson homered and drove in both of Solon’s runs while Izzy Frees produced two hits and Kayla Meseck had one. Kendall Jensen pitched the full game giving up twelve hits and ten runs (seven earned), walking two, and striking out two in the 10-2 loss.
The Raiders scored both runs in the nightcap in the first inning. Solon had five hits in the contest from Wilson, Addie Miller, Frees, Claire LaDage, and Meseck with a double for Frees. Maddyn Gates took the loss giving up four hits and two earned runs, walking one, and striking out three.
Regals shut out Lady Spartans 3-0
Regina Catholic (Iowa City) visited Wednesday, June 14 for a level 2/varsity double-dip. The Regals plated one runner in the top of the first and followed with two in the fifth for the win. Solon’s four hits came from Mia Stahle, McKenna Rogers, Maddyn Gates (a double), and Kayla Meseck. Kendall Jensen took the loss giving up 13 hits and three runs (two earned), walking one, and striking out six.
Gilbert Tigers bite Solon 2-0
The Lady Spartans found tigers to be troublesome Friday, June 16 as they competed in the Roland-Story Kiwanis Softball Tournament and faced both the Gilbert Tigers and the ADM Tigers.
Gilbert was ranked No. 12 in Class 4A in the June 15 IGHSAU rankings and scored both runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while holding Solon scoreless throughout. McKenna Rogers, Hilary Wilson, Kassidy Lietz, and Kayla Meseck produced Solon’s four hits with a double for Lietz. Maddyn Gates took the loss giving up six hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.
ADM Tigers take another bite out of Solon, 3-2
Adel-DeSoto-Minburn’s Tigers dropped out of the Class 4A rankings June 8 after being ranked 14th the week prior. ADM scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, which was answered with one Solon run in the fifth, and one in the seventh. The Tigers tied in the bottom of the seventh forcing extra innings but scored the winning run in the eighth.
Hilary Wilson and Addie Miller produced Solon’s three hits with two for Wilson plus an RBI. Maddyn Gates also drove in a run. Kendall Jensen took the loss going the distance in the circle giving up five hits and three runs (two earned), walking two, and striking out ten.
