SOLON — It was another busy week for the varsity baseball team as they split with the Marion Wolves in a WaMaC East conference battle in Marion, slipped past the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks in a non-conference game, shelled South Tama’s Trojans 22-2 through a home doubleheader, and Fought With Flash in the annual Crosstown Classic; falling to the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Iowa City, City High Little Hawks.
As the week ended however, the Spartans sat atop the WaMaC East at 8-2 (11-9 overall).
Solon splits with Marion’s Wolves 3-13 and 7-5
The week opened with a Monday, June 5 visit to Marion. The Wolves won game one 13-3 while the Spartans took the nightcap 7-5.
Tyler Bell led at the plate in the opener with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Blake Timmons, Nolan Seagren, and Vince Steinbrech produced one hit each with an RBI for Seagren. Steinbrech was charged with the loss with 2-1/3 innings on the mound and giving up four hits and nine runs (six earned). Cole Farnsworth gave up three hits and four earned runs for Solon.
In the nightcap, Seagren and Steinbrech produced two hits each with three RBIs for Steinbrech and two for Seagren. Timmons, Brett White, Gehrig Turner, and Dylan Gorham had one hit each with a double and an RBI for Turner. Jackson Link was awarded the win after 5-2/3 innings on the bump. Link gave up ten hits and five earned runs. Brick Kabela took the mound for 1-1/3 innings giving up one hit and no runs and striking out one.
The Wolves improved to 9-3 overall and finished the week at 12-3 (6-2 in the East for second).
Spartans edge past the Hawks 7-6
Mid-Prairie’s Golden Hawks visited Tuesday, June 6. Solon plated one runner in the bottom of the first and trailed after the Golden Hawks scored one run in the top of the fourth and fifth. However, a five-run effort by Solon in the fifth made it 6-2. The Hawks rallied with four runs in the seventh to tie 6-6 before the winning run dashed across the dish for Solon.
Brett White and Gehrig Turner knocked two hits each with a double for white and an RBI for Turner. Blake Timmons, Nolan Seagren, Garret Stebral, and Tyson Wheeler produced one hit each with a double and three RBIs for Seagren and an RBI by Timmons. Wheeler took the win giving up five hits and three earned runs while Kaden Hanson surrendered six hits and three earned runs with three walks and one strikeout.
The loss was the third of the season for the Golden Hawks who finished the week at 12-5 overall and at the top of the River Valley – South at 8-0.
Solon hammers South Tama’s Trojans 11-1 and 11-1
The WaMaC West’s Trojans fell to 2-11 after a punishing doubleheader in Solon Thursday, June 8.
Nolan Seagren had two hits to lead Solon in game one with one each from Brett White, Jackson Link, Vince Steinbrech, and Garret Stebral. Stebral drove in four runs, Steinbrech had two RBIs, with one apiece by Link, Tyson Wheeler, and Dylan Gorham. Aidan Doyle took the win after three innings on the mound giving up three hits and one earned run. He walked five and struck out three. Cole Farnsworth pitched two innings giving up one hit, walking one, and sitting down one batter.
It wasn’t quite Deja-vu again as while the score in the nightcap was the same, the Spartans produced 11 hits with the 11 runs as White, Link, and Tyler Bell smacked two hits each. White had a pair of RBIs, Link had a double and one RBI, and Bell drove in one run. Blake Timmons, Nolan Seagren, Steinbrech, Wheeler, and Gorham supplied one hit each with a double and RBI for Timmons, and an RBI each from Seagren, Steinbrech, Bell, and Gorham. Brick Kabela went the five-inning distance giving up one hit and one earned run, walking three, and striking out four.
City High wins Crosstown Classic game 12-6
For the third year, Solon hosted the Fight With Flash Crosstown Classic Saturday, June 10. The event, in its eighth year, is held in honor of Austin “Flash” Schroeder, who lost his life at the age of 14 to a form of T-cell lymphoma. His parents, Craig and Stacy, formed the Fight With Flash Foundation to keep the memory of Austin’s fighting spirit alive while serving children, adolescents, and young adults in their battle against cancer. The Foundation has donated over $700,000 to the fight.
The day opened with Solon facing Iowa City, City High.
Blake Timmons smashed a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Brett White drove Blake Timmons home in the bottom of the third and scored on an error to make it 3-0. However, the Little Hawks scored 12 runs in the fifth. Solon answered with a Nolan Seagren RBI single, which scored Dylan Gorham. Vince Steinbrech scored on a wild pitch in the sixth making it 12-5, and Ty Bell drove in Garret Stebral to make it 12-6.
Solon’s seven hits came from Timmons (homer), White, Seagren, Steinbrech, Tyson Wheeler, Bell, and Gorham. Kaden Hanson was charged with the loss after 3-2/3 innings. He gave up nine hits and nine runs (four earned) and struck out one. Steinbrech, Wheeler, and Bell worked one inning each with Steinbrech giving up four hits and striking out one and Wheeler and Bell giving up one hit each. Timmons pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up two hits and three earned runs, walking two, and striking out one.
In other tournament action, Iowa City West High shut out Regina Catholic 7-0 and Liberty High (North Liberty) defeated Clear Creek Aman 9-5.
