SOLON — The Lady Spartans went on a six-game winning streak last week as they swept WaMaC East rival Marion, crushed the WaMaC West’s South Tama Trojans, and swept the River Valley Conference’s Wilton Beavers in a trio of doubleheaders. Solon sat atop the WaMaC East with a 9-1 Conference record and 12-3 showing overall.
Solon tames Marion’s Wolves 12-4, 6-5
The busy week opened Monday, June 5 with a visit to the Wolves’ den in Marion for a WaMaC East double dip. Solon and Marion each scored one run in the first inning, but three Lady Spartan runs in the top of the third and fourth, and four in the sixth gave Solon a commanding 11-2 advantage before scoring one more run in the seventh. The Wolves put up two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Izzy Frees led at the plate with three of Solon’s 13 hits including a double and an RBI. McKenna Rogers, Addie Miller, and Maddyn Gates produced two hits each with a homer and two RBIs for Miller. Mia Stahle (a triple), Hilary Wilson (a double and two RBIs), Kendall Jensen (solo homerun), and Claire LaDage (a double and two RBIs) rounded out the game one hitting.
Jensen went the distance in the circle giving up eight hits and four earned runs while walking one and issuing five strikeouts.
Both teams plated two runners in the first inning of the nightcap with Solon going ahead with two more in the third and building their lead to 6-2 with two in the fifth. The Wolves scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth.
The Lady Spartans’ bats stayed hot with ten hits total. Miller produced three singles, Wilson and Jensen had two hits each with a double for Wilson and a triple for Jensen. Stahle, Kayla Meseck, and Frees had one hit each. Wilson drove in two runs with one RBI each from Jensen, Kassidy Lietz, Frees, and LaDage.
Frees took the win with four innings in the circle giving up four hits and four earned runs while walking four and striking out four. Gates pitched three innings giving up two hits and one unearned run with one walk and one strikeout.
Lady Spartans blow out Tama’s Trojans 16-0, 14-0
The South Tama Trojans fell to 0-12 after a punishing doubleheader sweep Wednesday, June 7 in Solon.
Ten runs went up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning in game one followed by six in the second to seal the three-inning game.
Keegan Kleppe and Hilary Wilson cranked out two hits each with a homer and six RBIs for Wilson, and three RBIs for Kleppe. Izzy Frees, Avery Babbitt, and Kayla Meseck produced one hit each with one RBI apiece. Maddyn Gates gave up no hits, walked one, and struck out seven.
Twelve Solon runs in the first inning with two more in the second sealed the nightcap win.
Kendall Jensen belted out two hits with a homer and three RBIs, while McKenna Rogers, Wilson, Bailey Woolley (a double), and Claire LaDage (a double) had one hit each. Rogers and Woolley drove in three runs each with two RBIs for Wilson, and one RBI apiece by Addison Walter, LaDage, and Zoey Grimm.
Frees pitched all three innings giving up no hits, walking one, and issuing eight strikeouts.
Wilton’s Beavers fall 14-1 and 10-1 to Solon
The Lady Spartans traveled to Wilton Friday, June 9 for a non-conference doubleheader ranked No. 8 in Class 3A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s weekly rankings. The Beavers were ranked No. 5 in Class 2A.
Solon put one runner across the dish in the top of the first inning of game one and faced a 1-1 tie going into the top of the fourth. However, three Solon runs in the fourth, followed by six in the fifth and four in the sixth delivered the win.
Hilary Wilson and Addie Miller cranked out three hits each with four RBIs for Wilson and a double for Miller. Mia Stahle, McKenna Rogers, Maddyn Gates, and Kayla Meseck had two hits each with a pair of doubles for Rogers and two RBIs, one RBI for Gates, and a double and two RBIs for Meseck. Kendall Jensen, Izzy Frees, and Claire LaDage produced one hit each. Jensen pitched all six innings giving up six hits and one earned run with three walks and four strikeouts.
Solon plated three runners in the top of the second in game two, two in the fourth, and five in the seventh while the Beavers scored their only run in the bottom of the third.
Stahle (a single, double, and triple), and Wilson had three hits each with three RBIs for Stahle. Miller and Kassidy Lietz smacked two hits each with one apiece from Jensen, Gates, LaDage, and Meseck. Frees took the win with four innings in the circle giving up three hits and one earned run while walking three. Gates pitched three innings giving up one hit and striking out two.
