IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine had 152 senior medical students participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), or “Match Day” in 2023.
Jordan Haarsma of Solon was among the students celebrating. Haarsma matched with University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison, Wisconsin for post-graduate training in pediatrics.
Among this year’s class, 39% (60 students) chose primary care specialties, which include family medicine (18 matches), internal medicine (19 matches), pediatrics (18 matches), and obstetrics and gynecology (five matches). 45 will remain in Iowa for their first year of postgraduate training and 31 of these students will train next year at UI Hospitals and Clinics.
Geographically, the most popular state after Iowa for first-year training was California (14). Minnesota (ten), Illinois (seven), and Wisconsin (seven) round out the top-five states that will receive Iowa’s graduating students.
