SOLON — The varsity boys kicked off the 2023 baseball season last week with non-conference games against Bettendorf and Muscatine.
Bettendorf 11 Solon 5, and Bettendorf 6 Solon 5
Monday, May 15
An eight run second inning gave the Bettendorf Bulldogs a lead the Spartans couldn’t overcome in game one that turned into an 11-5 loss for Solon. The Spartans opened with three runs in the top of the first inning and added one run each in the fourth and fifth.
Jackson Link and Vince Steinbrech led at the plate with two hits each including a double and an RBI for Steinbrech, who was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs (one earned) and one hit in 1-2/3 innings on the mound. Brick Kabela gave up eight hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.
Gehrig Turner led with two hits including a double and three RBIs in game two. Blake Timmons, Brett White, Tyson Wheeler, and Steinbrech had one hit apiece. Wheeler took the loss after three innings on the bump giving up three runs (one earned) and two hits. Timmons pitched three innings giving up three unearned runs and two hits, walked five, and struck out six.
Muscatine 5 Solon 3
Tuesday, May 16
Blake Timmons walked, stole second and third, and put Solon on the scoreboard as he came home on a throwing error in the bottom of the first inning. The Muskies tied in the top of the third and Timmons scored again coming home in the bottom of the third, coming home on a balk for a 2-1 lead. Muscatine loaded the bases in the fourth and scored two as one run walked in and another scored on a passed ball.
Nolan Seagren had Solon’s only hit of the contest as Vince Steinbrech walked twice and Garret Stebral and Tyler Bell walked once with Bell scoring the third run.
Bell started on the mound and worked four innings giving up four hits and three runs (one earned), walking three and striking out four. Seagren pitched 2-1/3 giving up two runs (one earned), walking one and striking out three while Jackson Link pitched 2/3 of an inning with one walk and two strikeouts.
