SOLON — Strong winds provided a challenge Thursday, April 13 as the Lady Spartans squared off against South Tama and Vinton-Shellsburg at the Saddleback Ridge Golf Course in Solon. However, Solon won the triangular meet with a school record 167. South Tama finished the afternoon with 212 while Vinton-Shellsburg scored 215 in varsity action.
“After getting really close at an opponent’s course on Monday (Williamsburg), we (coaches) thought that we could probably break it, but we didn’t know it was going to happen in the next meet!” said Coach Curtis Hendrickson. “The wind was definitely a challenge, but our girls navigated it well. This week in practice we really concentrated on the little things that we can always control, attitude, effort, and focus. The girls have responded well!”
Lilly Houtakker and Taylor Dee both shot 40 with Houtakker winning the card back. Sydney Dee (43), Rylie Greazel (44), Izzy Frees (46), and Peyton Pentico (48) rounded out the varsity.
The JV1 squad won with 207 to South Tama’s 236 and Vinton-Shellsburg’s 222. Bailey Woolley led with 45 followed by Mya Miller (52), Jaya Farlinger (54), Brynn Deike (56), Julia Steinbrech (62), and Madalynn Harp (64). Emma Phelps (58), Ashley Hummel (73), and Ashley Farnsworth (85) competed as the JV2 squad.
The week opened with a 176-194 win over Williamsburg at the Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg. Houtakker was the medalist with 40 while Williamsburg’s Jaisel Bott was the runner-up (40). Taylor Dee (42), Greazel (46), Woolley (48), Sydney Dee (52), and Frees (57), rounded out the varsity scoring.
