SOLON — The varsity boys opened the 2023 season by winning their home invitational Thursday, March 30 at Lake MacBride Golf Course. The Spartans topped the field with 307 followed by Clear Creek Amana (325), Tipton (326), West Liberty (335), Williamsburg (338), West Branch (365), Benton Community (379), Durant (387), and Regina Catholic (Iowa City) (389).
Isaiah Zoske led Solon with 68, good for second place behind champion Tristan Sorgenfrey of Tipton, who shot 67. Jack McCarty had 78 (sixth place) while Mac McCarty carded 79 (seventh place). Rounding out the Spartans were Quinton Heineman (85), Sean Stahle (87), Nolan Seagren and Gehrig Turner (88), and Cole Buffington (91).
“I was extremely pleased with how the boys did. We started when the temps were a bit cool and as the day went on it definitely warmed up, but that also brought in higher winds. So, I thought the kids did a nice job adjusting to those changes,” said Coach Adam Stahle. Before the meet the boys had only been on the course for four days. “I was a bit anxious for our first 18-hole meet but the kids came out ready to go.”
The Spartans return four letterwinners from last year’s squad, which finished second in class 3A – senior Mac McCarty (2nd Team WaMaC), juniors Jack McCarty (2nd Team WaMaC and 1st Team Iowa Golf Coaches) and Brennan Heesch, and sophomore Zoske (1st Team WaMaC and 2nd Team Iowa Golf Coaches). Seniors Heineman and Stahle are new to the team with junior Garret Stebral and sophomore Brady Evers.
Scott Wolfe, Nathan Miller, and Jared Galpin are assisting Stahle this season.
