TIPTON — Winning five events and placing in 18 of 19 overall pushed Solon over the top at the March 28 Tipton Early Bird Relays. The Lady Spartans outpointed Maquoketa 140-125 with Western Dubuque-Cascade at 105. Tipton was third with 96. West Branch, Midland/Wyoming, Iowa City Regina, Dyersville Beckman, Central DeWitt, North Cedar, Clear Creek Amana and Bellevue Marquette split the rest of the field.
Relay strength built and then extended that lead. ‘Firsts’ came in the 800 sprint medley and 4×200 ran by Aly Stahle, Piper Stahle, Sophia Stahle, Gracie Federspiel in 1:53.26 and 1:45.75, the 4×100 with Aly Stahle, Emma Wolff, Piper Stahle, and Grace Erwin in 52.18, the 4×400 with Grace Hoeper, Anna Quillin, Jozie Lahr, and Federspiel in 4:13, the 4×800 with Ashlyn Williams, Hoeper, Ella Sheeley, and Quillin in 10:31.11, and the shuttle hurdle relay with Calla Foster, Aly Stahle, Trea Eidahl, and Sophia Stahle in 1:09.32. Backup support came in the 4×200 relay when Kobi Lietz, Marin Ashbacker, Jozie Lahr, and Britta Elijah turned in a 1:53.95 for the third fastest in the field.
“We are fairly strong overall, but still working on filling some of those 400, 800 gaps from last year,” assessed head coach Jess Brimeyer. “Several girls (at Tipton) were running 1:04 in the 400, which was awesome to see.” That gives us lots of options, girls in great position right now early in the season. We also have some strong 800 runners dropping times from last season already and showing they’re ready to step up and fill some of those spots.”
Individual wins came from Sophia Stahle (1:05.25, 400 hurdles) and Kate Schafer (115-3, discus). More points came from Trea Eidahl, seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:17.61)) and discus teammates Abbie Felton (105-6, third place) and Hilary Wilson (94-5, for fifth). In other field events, Felton was fourth in the shot put (32-7) with Leah Kollar (32-5) and Shafer (31-7) sixth and eighth. Lilly Towne (4-8) took third in the high jump and Aisley Foster’s 14-11 long jump snagged second place points.
Back on the track, Grace Erwin earned fifth in the 100 (13.60). In the 100 hurdles, Calla Foster’s 17.81 was also fifth. Ashlyn Williams (5:28.46) and Mary Fiala (5:43.66) went fourth and fifth in the 1500. Hailey Miller’s 1:08.50 was good for fourth place in the 400. Ella Sheeley was third in the 800 (2:43.41).
