What to know about radon!
A friend’s mother recently underwent the surgical removal of the upper lobe of her lung due to cancer suspected in large part to the extremely high level of radon in their northwest Iowa home, measured at 43pCi/L! This was a wakeup call about this silent danger present in so many Iowa homes. This story led to another friend recently getting a radon testing of their Solon home that tested 8pCi/L, which resulted in scheduling a Radon remediation.
According to the EPA the entire state of Iowa is considered at high risk for radon gas in homes. Radon is an odorless, colorless, naturally occurring gas formed by the decay of radioactive materials. Radon itself is radioactive and poses a significant health risk as the second leading cause of lung cancer. 71.6% of Iowa homes are above the US Environmental Protection Agency action level of 4pCi/L. Home radon detectors range in price from $229 to $35. There are local companies who perform detection tests.
