GRINNELL — The WaMaC conference indoor girls track meet provided the venue and competition for member schools to measure where they stand before things move outdoors. No team scores were kept, as most full teams had only been practicing for a few days. Any extended basketball action slows some schools, come track season Spring break carves away another week for many. Others don’t have indoor facilities to accommodate the numbers they’ll see through the late winter.
As a result, there were no official team scores posted. Solon though, posted some impressive highlights despite early season limitations at the conference meet in Grinnell Saturday, March 18.
Among them, an early crack at the state leader board in the 4×200 relay. A 1:49.61 finish from Solon’s Aly, Mia, Piper, and Sophia Stahle was not only a winner, but as a Class 3A entry, their 1:49.61 showed as the fifth fastest in the early indoor season in Iowa. The other four times had all been recorded by Class 4A schools this late winter. Of course, more indoor meets may chip away at that. And times will surely drop as teams get outside and away from the tight turns and narrow lanes found indoors.
Three Solon throwers pushed into the eight girl finals of the shot put. Abbie Felton was fourth at 34-1¾. Other ‘top three’ finishes included Sophia Stahle’s 9.53, winning the 60-meter hurdles; A ‘cross country reunion’ of Kayla Young, Gracie Federspiel, Ashlynn Williams and Mary Fiala put up a 10:24.39 win in the 3200 relay; and Sophia Stahle ran 1:02.46 for the open 400 win. Federspiel’s 2:24.10 was the best 800 of the day. Grace Erwin’s 28.92 performance in the 200 was good for third.
