About 1,500 students attend the four schools in the Solon Community School District. The district wants more money for facilities.
A referendum on the $25 million request is on the March 7 special election ballot. I encourage every district voter to learn about the request and vote.
The bond issue is not simple. Each of three items on the ballot is lengthy and, in my opinion, too wordy. It is not intuitive from the ballot language which way a person should vote. I don’t recommend either skipping the election or waiting until you are in the voting booth to decide.
The school district posted an explainer. Get to a computer and read it on this website: https://www.solon.k12.ia.us/page/scsd-facility-bond-referendum
The ballot language can be found on the Johnson County Auditor website here: https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/march-7-2023-solon-community-school-district-special-election
This one deserves our diligence in understanding what the school district wants. Our schools benefit students and the community in many, complex ways. Is this bond necessary and important? I don’t know yet, but I plan to study it and make an informed vote on March 7. I hope readers will too.
