SOLON — The No.3-ranked (in Class 3A) varsity girls moved to 14-2 overall (9-1 in the WaMaC East) after a three-game week that saw wins over rival Mount Vernon and Independence (Indee), and a non-conference loss to No.2-ranked (in Class 4A) North Polk.
Solon 56 Mount Vernon 50
It was another “W” for Solon against arch-rival Mount Vernon Tuesday, Jan. 17 as the Lady Spartans edged past the Mustangs 56-50.
Callie Levin led all with 24 points, Hailey Miller had a 12 point night with 11 from Mia Stahle, five from Kobi Lietz, and two points apiece by Hilary Wilson and Delainey Durr. Levin led all on the boards with eight rebounds, Wilson had five, Stahle pulled down four, Lietz grabbed three, Anna Quillin made two, and Miller had one. Miller made three assists, Lietz and Levin had two, and Stahle and Wilson had one apiece. Levin also led Solon with four steals.
Mount Vernon’s Chloe Meester led the Mustangs with 20 points and five rebounds.
Solon 59 Independence 23
Sparty’s Ladies hosted the Independence Mustangs Friday, Jan. 20 and rolled to a 59-23 win with a 19-7 advantage at the end of the first period. Solon led 42-15 at the half and held Indee scoreless in the third while adding another twelve points for a 54-15 lead.
Levin led all with 15 points, Miller had ten, Quillin produced nine, Lietz and Durr had seven points each, Wilson had a five point night, Stahle contributed four, and Gable Knight had two. Quillin dominated on the boards with a game high 11 rebounds, Lietz made seven assists, and Levin made eight steals.
North Polk 66 Solon 49
The Lady Spartans had a nine-game winning streak going when the North Polk Comets visited Saturday, Jan. 21. Unfortunately, the Comets snapped that streak as they handed Solon a 58-44 loss after leading 13-11 after the first period and trailing Solon by one point, 26-25, at halftime. A 19-point effort by the Comets, while holding Solon to nine, created a hole for the Lady Spartans who trailed 44-35 going into the final eight minutes.
Levin led all with 28 points (including four three-point baskets) while North Polk’s MaKayla Boatman had 21. Stahle had a seven points, Wilson produced four, Lietz had three, and Miller put up two. Wilson led Solon with seven rebounds, Lietz made seven assists, and Stahle had two steals.

Saturday, Jan. 28 the Spartans visit Iowa City Regina in a girl-boy doubleheader with freshmen boys playing at noon, JV girls at 1:30 p.m., sophomore boys at 3:00 p.m., varsity girls at 4:30 p.m., and the varsity boys tipping off at 6:00 p.m. West Delaware visits Tuesday, Jan. 31 for a girl-boy doubleheader with JV girls and freshmen boys playing at 4:30 p.m., varsity girls and sophomore boys at 6:00 p.m., and the varsity boys at 7:15 p.m. The Mount Vernon Mustangs return for Senior Night Friday, Feb. 3 for a doubleheader.
