CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High School’s varsity and junior varsity (JV) men’s swim teams soaked the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks in a dual meet Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Jefferson. The varsity Little Hawks won 106-64 while the JV squad won 105-20.
Solon’s Grant Bumsted finished fourth in the varsity 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events in 25.96 and 59.32 seconds respectively. He joined City’s Ivan Shinkunas, Drew Brown, and Joe Polyak for the varsity 200-yard medley relay. The foursome took second place in 1:56.80. Bumsted and City’s Evan Raefield, Grayson Wills, and Polyak teamed up for the varsity 200-yard freestyle relay with a fourth-place finish in 1:40.98.
“(It was) nice to have so many guys back after getting slammed with illnesses,” said Coach Mandi Kowal. “We’ve been missing over 50% of our guys from the last three meets. Fun to shift things up (and) have them swim some different events,” she added.
City High welcomes the Waterloo East-Waterloo West team Tuesday, Jan. 3 for a 6:00 p.m. dual meet at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center and travels to Cedar Falls Thursday, Jan. 5 for a 6:00 p.m. meet before the annual City High/West High-Liberty High meet Tuesday, Jan. 10 (at Mercer Park).
