CLARENCE — The varsity Spartans won the team title at North Cedar’s wrestling invitational Saturday, Dec. 10 at North Cedar High School in Clarence. The Spartans topped the 13-team field with 173 team points. Belle Plaine was the runner up with 155.5 followed by North Linn (108.0), Waterloo West (91.0), New London (87.5), Maquoketa Valley (80.0), Durant and North Cedar (tied at 77.0), Highland, Riverside (65.5), Epworth, Western Dubuque (61.0), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (43.0), Montezuma (34.5), and Central City (20.0).
Lawsin Sinnwell (8-3) won at 132 pounds after pinning North Linn’s Luke Barth (3-8) in 36 seconds in the quarterfinals, taking a 13-3 major decision from Belle Plaine’s Will Sankot (9-5) in the semifinals, and pinning Durant’s Wyatt Cole (10-3) in 27 seconds in the 1st Place match.
Jayden Steapp and Evan Burg were the runner ups at 106 and 113 pounds respectively. Steapp (2-3) pinned Maq. Valley’s Brayden Bjorkgren (3-3) in 1:26 in the first round, fell in 3:00 to Belle Plaine’s Jackson Weeda (11-2) in the second round, and rebounded to a 9-4 decision over Waterloo West’s James Knight (4-6) in the third round.
Burg (4-6) pinned Belle Plaine’s Evan Grieder (4-3) in 1:31 in the second round but fell in 3:08 to Belle Plaine’s Hunter Henry (8-3) in the third round.
Kyler Jessup (6-7), David Karam (6-7), Kyler Jensen (5-6), and Joe Ebert (3-8) placed third at 120, 152, 182, and heavyweight respectively. Carson Kidwell (5-6), Teague Williams (6-6), and Braydon Hoffman (7-4) placed fourth at 138, 145, and 220. Charlie Karam (4-7), Fischer Harrison (4-7), Zeb Kleinsmith (4-2), and Grant Wilson (7-4) finished the day in fifth place at 138, 160, 195, and 220 pounds. Oliver Owens (4-6) placed sixth at 195 pounds.
