INDEPENDENCE — The Spartan mat men opened the 2022-23 season with an appearance in the 2022 Cliff Keen Invitational tournament. 36 schools from across Iowa and including Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri were represented in the two-day tournament held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3 in Independence.
Lawsin Sinnwell (4-2) was the highest-placing Spartan in the tournament with a tenth place showing 132 pounds. Braydon Hoffman (4-2) was 11th at 220 pounds, David Karam (3-4) and Joe Ebert (1-4) placed 14th at 152 and 285 respectively, Oliver Owens (1-3) placed 15th at 195 while Evan Burg (1-4), Charlie Karam 91-4), and Fischer Harrison (1-4) placed 16th at 113, 138, and 160 pounds. Kyler Jensen (2-3) placed 18th at 182 pounds, Grant Wilson (3-3) finished 19th at 220.
Kyler Jessup (3-4), Jordan Schmidt (2-5), and Carson Kidwell (3-4) placed 21st at 120, 126, and 138 pounds while Hunter Campion (1-4) was 23rd at 106, Jackson Feuerbach (0-5) was 24th at 170, and Teague Williams (3-3) was 26th at 145 pounds.
The boys will travel to Williamsburg Thursday, Dec. 8 to take on the Raiders and Prairie High School (Cedar Rapids) at 6:00 p.m. and will compete in North Cedar’s tournament Saturday, Dec. 10 at 10:00 a.m. in Clarence. Center Point-Urbana will host Independence and Solon Thursday, Dec. 15 at 6:00 p.m.
The first home meet is set for Thursday, Dec. 22 as Keokuk, Midland, Muscatine, and Vinton-Shellsburg visit for an evening of dual meets starting at 3:00 p.m.
