CORALVILLE — The Lady Spartan wrestlers competed in the 2022 Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1 and 2 at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville. The annual tourney is considered a premier high school wrestling event with over 40 boys teams and 24+ girls teams in competition.
McKenna Rogers was the top-finisher for Solon with a third place finish at 105 pounds.
“In our opening round of the tournament we didn’t wrestle as well as we would have liked,” said Coach Jake Munson. “From the second round on though we refocused the girls on effort and execution versus wins and losses and it showed in how we wrestled in those later rounds.”
Addison Burden (145 pounds) finished tenth, Adlie Miller (235) placed 12th, Olivia Bonnema (135) placed 14th, Alexis Anderson (140) placed 15th, Kara Vedepo (105) placed 16th, and Abby Gregory (120) placed 18th.
Alannah Mahoney (125) and Meg Düster (135) placed 20th in their respective weight classes, Kate Richards (115) placed 21st, Mikayla “Mik” Langenberg (130) placed 23rd, and Kendall Jensen (170) placed 27th.
“The girls are working hard in the wrestling room to get better each day,” Munson said. “The first portion of our season involved introducing a lot of wrestling technique to the girls. As we move into the second portion of our season, our focus will shift to improving on that technique, spending significantly more time wrestling live, and ensuring we are in wrestling shape. This has been a great group of athletes to get to work with. They do an awesome job of supporting one another while challenging each other to improve. Coach (Kaitlin) Hatcher and I are excited to see what the next few weeks on the mat will bring.”
Solon travels to Williamsburg Thursday, Dec. 8 for a 6:00 p.m. double dual with the Raiders and Prairie, Cedar Rapids. Marion will host a tournament Saturday, Dec. 10 starting at 9:00 a.m. and the ladies travel to Center Point-Urbana Thursday, Dec. 15 for a 6:00 p.m. double dual against the Stormin’ Pointers and Independence.
