CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High’s boys junior varsity (JV) and varsity swim teams opened the 2022-23 season Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Cedar Rapids Kennedy and swept the cougars 112-54 (varsity) and 105-31 (JV). Solon’s Grant Bumsted and Tyler Gregory are swimming with the Little Hawks this season, and City High coach Mandi Kowal noted Bumsted, a junior, had a great night competing for the JV squad.
Bumsted won the JV 50-yard freestyle and JV 100-yard freestyle in 25.96 seconds and 1:00.56 respectively. He joined City’s Ivan Shinkunas, Danyal Mueh, and River Vanderhoef for a 2nd place finish in the JV 200-yard medley relay with a total time of 2:05.52, and teamed up with Mueh, William Sprengelmeyer, and Shinkunas for the 2nd place JV 200-yard freestyle relay with a total time of 1:57.64.
The Little Hawks host an invitational Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center (2701 Bradford Drive) in Iowa City starting at 11:00 a.m. and travel to Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School Tuesday, Dec. 20 for a 6:00 dual meet.
