SOLON — The Lady Spartans moved to 2-0 in the opening weeks of the 2022-23 basketball season with a 67-42 win over Nodaway Valley Saturday, Nov. 26 at home. The Class 2A Wolverines, out of the Pride of Iowa Conference (SW Iowa), dipped to 1-1.
Hailey Miller, a junior, opened up for Solon with a pair of free throws for an early 2-0 lead. The Wolverines charged ahead to go up 6-2 before Kobi Lietz, a sophomore, drained a three-point bucket to cut the deficit to one point, 6-5. Hilary Wilson, a senior, put in a pair of free throws for a 7-6 lead, and Miller put in a two-point shot for a 9-8 advantage. Mia Stahle, a junior, and Lietz combined for four free throws, and Wilson sank a two-pointer to give Solon a 15-10 lead while a three-pointer from junior Callie Levin made it 18-10. A second three from Levin ended the first period with a 23-10 advantage.
Miller opened the second period with a steal and a layup making it 25-10, Stahle dropped in a free throw, and Levin sank a two-pointer to lead 28-12. Miller, Levin, and freshman Delainey Durr sank a field goal each on the way to a 34-24 halftime lead. The Wolverines drained a pair of three-pointers in the period.
Miller struck twice to start the second half for a 38-30 advantage, Lietz sank a three-pointer, Stahle put up two points off an assist from Miller, and Levin hit her third three-point basket of the day as the Lady Spartans went up 46-30. Kerrigan Lyons, a senior, put up two points for a 48-30 lead, and Solon took the third period 52-32.
Levin, and Stahle built a 56-34 lead ahead of a seven-point run by Levin for a 63-37 lead in the fourth, and Durr, Gabie Knight (freshman), Sara Holtz (senior), Lyons, and Lietz took over with freshman Trea Eidahl coming in for Lietz for the final minutes. Durr put in the final two Solon points making it 67-40.
Levin led all with 22 points including a trio of three-pointers. Miller had 16 points, Lietz produced 12, Stahle had a seven-point afternoon, Wilson and Durr contributed four points each with two from Lyons.
Nodaway’s Joja Holliday, a junior, dominated the boards with 18 rebounds (13 defensive). Miller led Solon with seven (six defensive), Lietz and Levin had five apiece with four from Wilson, two from Durr, and one each by Stahle, Eidahl, and Knight.
The ladies travel to Williamsburg to take on the WaMaC West Raiders Friday, Dec. 2 with JV tipping off at 6:00 p.m., and varsity following around 7:15 p.m. They’ll travel to Vinton-Shellsburg Tuesday, Dec. 6 and host Center Point-Urbana Friday, Dec. 9.
