IOWA CITY — The wrestling Lady Spartans opened the 2022-23 season by competing in the Little Hawk Invitational Tuesday, Nov. 15 at City High.
Kara VeDepo, McKenna Rogers, and Olivia Bonnema won their divisions (1, 3, and 12 respectively) with three pins each for VeDepo and Rogers, and two pins for Bonnema. VeDepo won by fall (pinned) Anamosa’s Emily Fritz in 24 seconds, Tipton’s Koda Fogg in 1:04, and Dubuque Senior’s Carly Hefel in 1:40. Rogers pinned Prairie’s Alix Zahn in 1:32, Senior’s Kenedy Stolk in 2:00, and Anamosa’s Ryan Carlson in 54 seconds. Bonnema came out on the wrong end of an 11-2 major decision to Tipton’s Becca Hinderaker, but followed up with pins over Senior’s Ar ‘Eyonne’ Evans in 25 seconds and Anamosa’s Elise Broghammer in 2:10.
Kate Richards, Abby Gregory, Addison Burden, and Kendall Jensen placed second in Divisions 4, 5, 18, and 24.
Mikayla “Mik” Langenberg, Alexis Anderson, Eleanor Gnida, Audrey Howell, Lily Warnock, and Adlie Miller placed third in Divisions 11, 13, 14, 21, 26, and 27.
Alannah Mahoney and Morgan Rogers placed fourth in Division 6 and 8.
Solon will compete in a two-day tournament Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1 and 2 at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville, and in Williamsburg’s invitational Monday, Dec. 5 (starting at 4:00 p.m.). The ladies return to Williamsburg Thursday, Dec. 8 for a 6:00 p.m. double dual with the Raiders and Prairie, Cedar Rapids.
