SOLON — Terry Fiala has a number of “firsts” under his belt.
A 1956 graduate of Solon High School, he played in the first officially organized football game in school history on Sept. 23, 1954. In the final seven seconds, Fiala cemented his legacy as he caught a pass from Marshall (Buck) Keith and ran it in for a touchdown. Fiala’s score tied and ended the game against Iowa City’s University High at 7-7. In 1955, he was crowned the second ever Homecoming King in school history.
Fiala’s achievement was recognized Friday, Sept. 30 before the Homecoming game against Washington (Iowa). He was named Honorary Captain and participated in the pregame coin toss.
Activities Director Casey Haack said the honor was the first, at least during his tenure, for Homecoming.
