CEDAR RAPIDS — The varsity baseball team dipped to 6-6 overall with a 12-4 non-conference loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic Wednesday, June 1 on the Saints’ diamond.
Solon plated one run in the top of the first but were held scoreless through the second and third while the Saints scored one in the bottom of the second, and four in the third. The Spartans cut the deficit with two runs in the fourth, but another Xavier run went up in the bottom of the inning. Solon’s final run came in the fifth ahead of a five-run barrage by Xavier in the bottom half with one more in the sixth.
Blake Timmons led at the plate with two hits, including a double. Brett White and Michael Pipolo produced one hit apiece while Ty Bell and Pipolo drove in one run each. Vince Steinbrech pitched three innings giving up six hits and five runs (four earned), walked three, and struck out two. Jackson Link worked the mound for two innings giving up six hits and six runs (three earned), walked three, and struck out two while Brick Kabela pitched one inning giving up two hits and one earned run with one walk, and one strikeout.
The Saints improved to 10-2.
