SOLON — The varsity boys easily won the first round of postseason play as they defeated Aplington-Parkersburg/Dike-New Hartford (AP/DNH) 10-1 in a Class 2A substate match Thursday, May 19 at home.
Dillon Bruck opened with the first of two goals with 24:59 remaining in the first period for a 1-0 lead. The Falcons equalized five minutes later, but the rest of the contest belonged to the Spartans.
Eli Freerks scored with 17:24 remaining, and Keegan Conway struck less than a minute later with help from the Falcon’s keeper to make it 3-1. William Wittich scored the first of his two goals to make it 4-1 with 9:20 left in the half and nailed his second five minutes later for a 5-1 lead at the break.
Ethan McLaughlin buried a penalty kick (PK) in the goal two minutes into the second period, Logan Sieverding struck with 34:29 remaining, and Bruck got his second goal off a Wittich assist to make it 8-1 with 26:11 remaining. Owen Erusha scored off a Bruck assist, and Caleb Bock put in the final goal with just under 12 minutes left in the match.
John Peters allowed only the one goal in 80 minutes in goal.
The win advanced the Spartans to the semifinal round and a visit from 4-14 Independence on Monday, May 23. The winner faced either Bondurant-Farrar (15-2) or Benton Community (8-10) Wednesday, May 25 at Bondurant-Farrar in the State Qualifier match.
The 2022 State Tournament is scheduled for June 1, 3, and 4 at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.
