Library events
The Friends of the Library will host its annual used book sale Saturday, March 5 from 8 a.m. to noon in the library meeting room. Used books, movies and audiobooks will be available for purchase. Your support of the Friends group helps fund Library events like the summer reading program.
Spring is in the air. Join us at the Library for a Master Gardener’s Workshop to learn about starting seeds, Friday, March 11, at 6 p.m. Master Gardeners, Linda Schreiber and Jackie Wellborn, will teach us which seeds are best to start indoors, how to start them and when.
While we’re talking spring, March is also known for basketball tournaments and all the excitement over filling out brackets with the hope of naming the champion. Instead of picking basketball champions, join us as we partake in March Mammal Madness. March Mammal Madness is an annual tournament of simulated combat competition among animals, and fun for all ages. Scientific literature is cited to substantiate likely outcomes as a probable function of the two species’ attributes within the battle environment. Anyone can participate in the madness. Pick up your bracket, check out some books to make your educated guesses about which animals would win, and turn in your bracket by March 12 to participate. Then keep an eye on our social media to see the outcome. Prizes will be awarded for patrons who pick the closest to the tournament bracket.
Adults (16-plus) are invited to register for the monthly DIY Night activity. On March 8, registered participants will paint a ceramic mug to be fired at Renee’s Ceramic Cafe. Participants may select to pick up a kit to paint at home and join us via Zoom or join us in the Library meeting room at 6:30 p.m. (face masks required). Limited supplies available, please register early online or at the Library.
The Solon Public Library Foundation awards two $500 Don Ochs Scholarships to promote life-long learning for all members of our community. The details of the scholarship application process can be found on our website, applications are due by Friday, March 25.
Digital Storytime for the month of March is all about the ABCs. We’ll share stories featuring the ABCs orally and using American Sign Language, Braille and body language. An all-new Digital Storytime premieres each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. on our website, YouTube channel and Facebook page. You can find all 100-plus episodes online to watch anytime.
This month our Digital Storytime is sponsored by the Solon Women’s Club, who started the very first library here in Solon. We are so lucky to have their continued support.
Teens in fifth through 12th grades, we challenge you to join the fun of the 2022 Teen Reading Challenge in three easy steps. Read a book, fill out the Google form, and claim a prize. Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall. Gritty with pain and betrayal and brutality, this true story also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love. Meet Denver, raised under plantation-style slavery in Louisiana, until he escaped the “Man” — in the 1960s — by hopping a train. Non-trusting, uneducated, and violent, he spent another 18 years on the streets of Dallas and Fort Worth. Meet Ron Hall, a self-made millionaire in the world of high-priced art deals — concerned with fast cars, beautiful women and fancy clothes. The woman who changed their lives — Miss Debbie: “The skinniest, nosiest, pushiest, woman I ever met, black or white.” She helped the homeless, gave of herself to all of “God’s People,” and had a way of knowing how to listen and helping others talk and be found, until cancer strikes. All three memoirs and the movie are available at the Library.
Run Fast, Eat Slow by Shalane Flanagan. Fuel up like 2017 New York City Marathon Champion Shalane Flanagan. From world-class marathoner and four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan and chef Elyse Kopecky comes a whole foods, flavor-forward cookbook — and New York Times bestseller — that proves food can be indulgent and nourishing at the same time. Finally, here’s a cookbook for runners that shows fat is essential for flavor and performance and that counting calories, obsessing over protein and restrictive dieting does more harm than good.
