Eight girls represented Solon at state: front from left, Cheyenne Mulford and Olivia Bonnema; back row, Kara VeDepo, Addison Burden, Safina Yermetova, Emilee Suchomel, Bella Feaker and Eleanor Gnida.
Eight members of the Solon wrestling team competed at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association’s Girls’ State Tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Jan. 21-22.
“We were only able to take eight of our 14 girls due to injury or illness but those eight girls did a great job of wrestling their best,” coach Jake Munson said.
“All eight girls won at least one match with the eight of them combined for 19 victories. As a team we finished 20th out of 158 teams, the highest placing of any team without an individual state place winner. As a program we focus on effort and execution over results, and this tournament epitomized that as our girls wrestled well.”
Addison Burden led the Spartans with a 4-2 record at 135 pounds. Kara VeDepo (105), Safina Yermeto (115), Olivia Bonnema (130) and Emilee Suchomel (170) all went 3-2. Bella Feaker (120) and Cheyenne Mulford (125) were 2-2, Eleanor Gnida (135) 1-2.
