SOLON– The Mustangs couldn’t keep up with junior Dillon Bruck.
Bruck’s second hat trick of the week powered Solon to a 3-1 varsity soccer win over Mount Vernon Thursday, April 29, at Spartan Stadium.
Solon improved to 8-3 on the season while Mount Vernon fell to 3-8.
“It was a nice win for us against a physical Mount Vernon squad,” said Solon Head Coach Jeremy McMurrin. “The boys played hard and got a nice result.”
Bruck’s first goal came on a penalty kick in the box just eight minutes into the match. His second gave Solon a 2-0 halftime lead and his third was the Spartans’ final score.
Mount Vernon’s Caleb Dausener spoiled the shutout with an unassisted goal in the second half against Solon junior keeper John Peters. Peter notched four saves.
The Spartan defense held the Mustangs to three shots on goal and five shots total.
Solon amassed 10 shots, seven on goal.
Senior Gabe Yetley was credited with an assist for Solon.
Earlier in the week, the Spartans picked up their seventh win on the road at Maquoketa.
Solon netted three goals in each half for a 6-0 victory Tuesday, April 27.
Three of them belonged to Bruck, with two added by Yetley and one by freshman Eli Freerks. Yetley, Freerks and junior William Wittich had assists.
The Spartans bombarded Cardinal goalie Samuel Knotts with 35 shots, 21 on goal. Knotts kept busy with 23 saves, while Peters had a single save defending the Solon goal. Maquoketa was limited to only one shot on goal, and four shots total.
The Spartans were scheduled for back-to-back road games against Williamsburg Monday, May 3, and at Center Point-Urbana Tuesday, May 4, before returning home to host Independence Tuesday, May 11.
