VAN HORNE– Chalk up two more wins for the varsity boys’ golf team.
The Spartans defended home turf at Lake Macbride Golf Course with a triangular win and then fended off Grinnell for a victory in a quadrangular meet at Tara Hills Country Club near Van Horne last week.
At home Monday, April 26, Solon blew past both Mount Vernon and West Delaware with five of the top six scores. The Spartans notched a 161, with the Mustangs and Hawks well behind with 190.
Solon had more of a battle Thursday, April 29, against Grinnell.
The Spartans held off the Tigers, 172-179, with South Tama (201) and host Benton Community (204) sparring for third and fourth.
“I am extremely proud of the team for coming together and competing all year long,” said Solon Head Coach Adam Stahle. “We have played in some very challenging weather conditions and the boys battled through it and played well. All credit goes to them.”
Sophomore Mac McCarty (38) led another group of tightly-packed Spartans in the home triangular against Mount Vernon and West Delaware.
Freshman Jack McCarty took runner-up honors with a 39, with junior Frank Haege Jr. just a stroke back at 40.
Mount Vernon’s Cooper Parks interrupted the streak of Spartans atop the leaderboard with a 42, but Solon senior Stetson McIlravy and senior Lucas TePoel were right behind, each with a 44. Senior Ethan Swan rounded out the varsity squad with a 51.
Solon placed all six of its varsity competitors in the top 12 in the four-team meet at Tara Hills later in the week.
Haege led the charge with a 40, claiming the individual runner-up, while McIlravy and TePoel each shot a 43, and Mac McCarty added a 46 for the team total. Freshman Brennan Heesch (48) and Jack McCarty (48) rounded out the squad.
Cole McGriff of Grinnell finished with the lowest score of the day, a 39.
The Spartans were scheduled to travel to the Pin Oak Pub and Links in Manchester Monday, May 3, for the WaMaC East Divisional Meet. The WaMaC Conference Supermeet is set for Monday, May 10, at the Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg.
“I am excited to see how the varsity team does this week at the WaMaC Divisional meet and how the JV (junior varsity) team closes out their season at Williamsburg on Friday,” Stahle said.
