IOWA CITY– Now that April has come to a close, Johnson County Treasurer Tom Kriz again reminds all residents second-half property taxes were due on Monday, March 1. Payments not delivered to the treasurer’s office or postmarked by Wednesday, March 31, accrued a 1 1/2 percent penalty on Thursday, April 1. A 1 1/2 percent penalty is applied to past due payments on the first of every month. In order to avoid accruing a second month of penalties, taxes must have been paid by Friday, April 30.
Property tax payments can be mailed to the treasurer’s office at 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City, but residents can also pay in-person or online.
The Johnson County Administration Building is open to the public by appointment. Property tax payments can be dropped off through a mail slot at the east entrance of the Johnson County Administration Building 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Make sure the payment is in an envelope before dropping it off. Property taxes can be paid in person by appointment at the Johnson County Treasurer’s Office at the Johnson County Administration Building, Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Online payments can be made at www.IowaTaxAndTags.org. Pay with an e-check; debit card; or VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card. The methods of payment, whether online or at the Treasurer’s Office, are subject to a convenience fee.
