SOLON– The Lady Spartans soccer team moved to 5-3 on the season Tuesday, April 27, at Spartan Stadium, swiping a 4-0 victory from the visiting Maquoketa Cardinals.
The victory came courtesy of roughly 30 shots on goal.
“I thought the girls brought energy after about the first 20 minutes of the game,” Head Coach Amanda Paulson stated. “They were able to push into the attacking third and get nearly 30 shots on goal, 12 from Morgan Link.”
The Cardinals mustered only seven total shots in the game, with just two on goal in 80 minutes of play. Goalie Aubrey Bahl spent 76 minutes defending the goal before suffering and injury while bobbling the ball, she was credited with 34 saves in the game. CJ Yeager finished the game in goal for Maquoketa.
Solon goalie sophomore Alex Paisley defended the net for all 80 minutes.
Link led Solon’s assault on the goal, firing 12 times, eight of which were on goal, and scored half of Solon’s points.
Senior Stella Mesch fired eight times, seven on the goal, and scored once for the Lady Spartans.
Freshman Grace Yetley also scored once for Solon, taking five shots, three on goal.
Sophomore Georgia Havlicek shot four times, once on goal; junior Alex Locke shot once on goal; junior Lauren Bevan fired four times, three of them on goal; and senior Sydney Rissman shot once on goal for Solon.
“Morgan (Link) has a great touch and can shoot from anywhere inside or outside the box, however, what I love about this team is our ability to play through multiple players,” Paulson said. “We do not have a single person whom we solely rely on and we have several dangerous players in the attack including Knipper, Yetley, Havlicek, Mesch and Bevans.”
The Lady Spartans had the Mount Vernon Mustangs in their crosshairs for the Thursday, April 29, game.
“The girls have been doing a great job executing what we work on in practice,” Paulson hailed. “We have been doing a lot of combination play and shooting to improve in our final third.”
