SOLON– On Jan. 3, 2016, Tanner Wymer drowned in the Coralville Reservoir helping his girlfriend’s father take a picture of their home from the viewpoint of the lake.
Over the past five years, Tanner’s parents, family, and friends sought ways to honor his legacy through the purchase of ice suits for the Solon Fire department, athletic equipment for the Solon High School weight room facility, toys for children at hospitals in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids and scholarships to deserving Solon Seniors for post secondary education.
The donations, in Tanner’s name, have been possible only through the kindness and generosity of people in Solon and the surrounding communities.
This year, a Poker Run and Raffle, will be held Saturday, May 8. The TW 5th Anniversary Memorial Motorcycle Ride departs from the Solon American Legion at 9:30 a.m. and returns to Solon around 5 p.m. to announce winners of the Poker Run and Raffle. Due to COVID-19, a silent auction will not be held this year.
The 2021 fundraising efforts benefit the Johnson County Metro Dive Team.
The goal is to raise $6,000 to aid in purchasing communication equipment to allow two dive teams to work simultaneously. Specifically, the family seeks to provide financial assistance for the purchase of communication technology aiding in the speed of drowning rescues.
The Tanner Wymer Memorial Ride raised funds supporting the following organizations: Solon Fire Department, University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, UIHC Bereavement Team, Mercy Medical Center Pediatric Unit, Solon High School athletic department, and Solon High School scholarships (two $1,000 scholarships per year: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020).
