MANCHESTER– If you see a Spartan on the leaderboard, chances are another one’s nearby.
Solon’s varsity boys continued their winning ways on the road last week, capturing top honors at a Clear Creek Amana (CCA) triangular and then pushing past a crowded field for the title at a West Delaware invitational.
In both cases, the Spartans were packed together near the top.
In Manchester Saturday, April 24, junior Frank Haege Jr. and freshman Jack McCarty each posted a 78 for runner-up medalist honors. Waverly-Shell Rock’s Hogan Hansen finished the 18 holes with a 74.
Senior Stetson McIlravy (81) and sophomore Mac McCarty (83) were only strokes behind in fifth and sixth place to seal up the Solon win with a team score of 320.
Senior Lucas TePoel (85) was tied for 11th, but out of the team total, while freshman Brennan Heesch was 24th with a 97.
The Spartans finished comfortably ahead of Waverly-Shell Rock (331), with Columbus Catholic taking third (345). Host West Delaware (353) settled for fourth, with Independence (361), Vinton-Shellsburg (361), Center Point-Urbana (363), Decorah (382) and Benton Community (406) rounding out the nine-team field at the Pin Oak Pub & Links.
On Monday, April 19, at the Amana Colonies Golf Club, Solon golfers went two-three-four in a triangular meet with WaMaC Conference rivals CCA and Independence.
The Spartans (170) held off the host Clippers (177), with the Mustangs just two strokes back (179).
Haege finished with a 39 to again snag runner-up honors. TePoel (42) and Jack McCarty (43) were third and fourth, with McIlravy and Mac McCarty each carding a 46 in eighth place. Heesch was 14th with a 49.
CCA sophomore Zach McCarty took medalist honors with a 37.
It’s an all-WaMaC week for the Spartans, who were scheduled to host Mount Vernon and West Delaware Monday, April 26, at Lake MacBride Golf Course. Solon heads for the Tara Hills Country Club near van Horne Thursday, April 29, for a triangular with host Benton Community and South Tama.
