OXFORD- The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls softball team improved to 18-13 on the season with a doubleheader win against the Independence Mustangs at home Monday, June 29.
The Clippers took both games 5-1.
Indee’s run in the opener came in the top of the first inning as a runner galloped across the plate.
It was all CCA after that with Claire Navara belting out a two-out, two-RBI hit with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning.
Jacquelyn Fairholm followed with her own two-RBI single for a quick 4-1 lead.
The Mustangs threatened in the fourth as they loaded up the bases with no outs. Clipper pitcher Megan Beckler managed to get out of the tough spot and Indee retired scoreless.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lauren Stopko batted in Grace Murray.
Stopko went 2-3 at the plate with one steal and one run scored.
The Clippers had four hits total in the game with Fairholm and Murray knocking one apiece. Beckler went the distance in the circle facing 27 batters, striking out two and walking four. She gave up one unearned run and four hits.
The Clippers wasted no time in the nightcap, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning with one run coming from a Lexi Kinnaird RBI single.
In the top of the third, the Mustangs scored with a play at the plate. CCA’s Grace Murray had the ball in hand and one foot squarely on the plate, yet in the opinion of the home plate umpire, the Lady Mustang who slid into her was safe.
The Clippers got the run back, with change, during their next at-bat with two runs as Murray reached third on what had started out as a single. Indee miscues allowed her to continue to advance. A sacrifice by Kinnaird brought in Navara, running in place of Murray, for the fifth and final run.
The Creek Girls put up 11 hits total: Stopko (3), Kinnaird (2), Courtney James (2), Skylar Hop (2), Hannah Mougin (1) and Murray (1). Murray and James each had a double while Murray led in RBI with three.
Hop worked the circle for all seven innings, giving up one earned run and four hits, while striking out four and walking two.
