Zacharias leads West, 83-33 in win over Dubuque

Women of Troy snap losing streak

DUBUQUE – Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy hit a rough stretch with four consecutive losses to Valley (West Des Moines), City High, Cedar Falls and Illinois’ Montini Catholic.
A trip to Dubuque Senior High School Tuesday, Jan. 30, snapped the downward spiral as West ran wild over the Rams, 83-33, despite an 18-point effort from Senior’s Alli Udelhofen.
West blasted the Rams 25-10 in the first period and held a 47-13 advantage at halftime.
Lauren Zacharias led West High with 15 points while Cailyn Morgan, Rachael Saunders and Emma Koch contributed 14 points each. Logan Cook rounded out the double-digit scorers for West with a 10-point night. Carrie Callahan produced five points with three points each from Grace Schneider, Audrey Koch and Paige Beckner. Matayia Tellis added two points.
The win improved West’s record to 12-7 while the Rams slipped to 6-13. West High remained the ninth-ranked team in Class 5A, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Wednesday, Jan. 31, rankings. City High was on top at 17-0 while Cedar Falls was in the No. 2 spot at 17-1 followed by Dowling Catholic (16-1), Johnston (15-3) and Ankeny Centennial (15-3) in the top-five.
West finishes the regular season at home on Friday, Feb. 9, as Waterloo West visits for a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip-off. The postseason opens with regional play on Wednesday, Feb. 14, as Davenport North and Davenport West tangle in a Class 5A Region 2 quarterfinal battle. The Women of Troy have a bye and will start the road to Des Moines Saturday, Feb. 17, at home against Linn-Mar at 7 p.m. The regional final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the highest remaining ranked seed’s site. North, West and Pleasant Valley make up the upper half of the regional bracket.
