Wrestlers first at Oelwein Invitational

OELWEIN– Despite an inexperienced lineup, the Solon varsity wrestlers captured another tournament title over the weekend.
With 219.5 team points, Solon edged out second-place Byron High School’s (Ill.) 216 points to claim the title at the Oelwein Invitational Dec. 15.
Oelwein (195 points) placed third at its own invitational while Crestwood came in fourth with 185 points.
“It was a great team effort in winning the Oelwein Invitational,” said Head Coach Blake Williams. “We beat a team from Illinois that is ranked No. 2 in its class, as well at Crestwood, which is ranked No. 4 in (Class) 2A in Iowa.”
All 14 wrestlers scored points for the Spartans, he noted, including championships by Graeson Dall (152 pounds) and Trevor Nelson (160 pounds).
Dall took a 5-3 decision over Neil Clement of Crestwood in his first-place match, and recorded a fall in his semifinal against Sam Graeser of Independence.
It only took 47 seconds for Nelson to pin Eric Ihde of Clayton Ridge in the 160-pound first place match. Nelson scored a fall in his quarterfinal and a major decision in his semifinal.
The Spartans were boosted in the scoring column by four second-place finishes, adding 86 points to their championship total.
Christian Haight (113 pounds), Cole Fritz (145), Dillon Diltz (170) and Zach Wegmann (195) all made it to the championship round in their weight classes, collecting seven pins among them along the way.
Ben Carr added a third place finish at 126 pounds, while Aidan Dall (106), Zack Bevans (132), Kendrick Harris (182) and Tyler Linderbaum (285) captured fourth-place team points.
“We only have one senior in our varsity lineup, so our team is young and a little inexperienced,” Williams said. “Our depth is our biggest challenge.”
