West defeats City, 8-1

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s varsity girls (including players from Clear Creek Amana, Mid-Prairie and Liberty High) remained undefeated on the tennis courts after knocking off rival City High and the J-Hawks of Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
The Women of Troy wore “Live Like Line” T-shirts in honor of the late Caroline Found Tuesday, May 1, as they met the Little Hawks at the University of Iowa’s Tennis Complex for their annual dual meet. Dr. Ernie Found (Caroline’s father) was honored for his continuing support of West High athletics, including the tennis program. West defeated City, 8-1.

A break in the weather allowed West to take on Jefferson Thursday, May 3, at West High. The Women of Troy defeated the J-Hawks 9-0 and improved to a 13-0 overall record and 12-0 Mississippi Valley Conference showing. Emma Koch remained undefeated in the one-spot after defeating University of Iowa-bound volleyball star Maddie Slagle, 8-3, and remained perfect in doubles action with sister Audrey after knocking off Slagle and Emma Lassen, 8-5. Coach Amie Villarini noted the teams played eight game pro sets rather than the usual 10 in an effort to finish ahead of predicted thunderstorms.
Bettendorf visits West High on Thursday, May 10, at 4 p.m. ahead of regional competition beginning on Saturday, May 12. West High has a first-round bye in Class 2A Team competition and will face the winner of a Davenport North and Davenport Central contest on Saturday, May 19, at home starting at 9 a.m. in a Region 3 semifinal. The regional final is set for 1 p.m. that afternoon.
The Class 2A regional singles and doubles tournaments begin on Wednesday, May 16, at 9 a.m. with West High hosting Burlington, Cedar Rapids Jefferson/Cedar Valley Christian, City High/West Branch/Regina, Marshalltown and Ottumwa in Region 8 competition.
