West athletes earn All-MVC Volleyball honors

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) released its 2017 All-Division Volleyball Selections Tuesday, Oct. 31, with five Iowa City West High student athletes earning recognition.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Maddie Slagle earned Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year, Jefferson’s Amy Norton was named the Division Coach of the Year and the Jefferson J-Hawks were the division team champion.
West senior Colby Greene earned a First Team spot in the Mississippi Division. Greene produced 300 kills to lead the Women of Troy and averaged 3.23 per set. She made 18 ace serves, made 10 assists, 130 digs, 26 block assists and 50 solo blocks.
Keimoney Lang and Claire Overton were Second Team picks. Lang, a senior, made seven kills and had 29 ace serves. She made 37 assists and 363 digs. Overton, a junior, had 142 kills with an average of 1.49 and made 10 ace serves. She had three assists, 93 digs, 19 block assists and 54 solo blocks.
Seniors Emily Burtch and Liz Walters earned spots on the Honorable Mention roster. Burtch made 102 kills this season averaging 1.48 per set and had six ace serves. She made 32 digs, 11 block assists and 31 solo blocks. Walters had one ace for the season, 14 ace serves and produced 90 digs.
West High finished the season at 22-16 and were the ranked 11th in Class 5A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s final weekly rankings. The 2017 season ended for Iowa City West on Monday, Oct. 30, in Dubuque, in the Region 7 final as Dubuque Hempstead swept the Women of Troy 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-22). Burtch and Greene led West High’s attack with 10 kills each with 22 digs from Cailyn Morgan and 20 from Lang. Greene made four solo blocks in the effort with one ace serve from Overton.
