Two champs!

First-ever twin titles for Solon

DES MOINES– It was the first time in school history Solon had two state champs in the same year.
It was also the first time Solon had a two-time winner.
Hayden Taylor and Jax Flynn ascended to the top of the podium at the Iowa Individual Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, capturing titles at 145 and 170 pounds, and propelling Solon’s wrestling team to a fourth place finish in Class 2A.
For Taylor, it was the second consecutive title; Flynn became the seventh state champ in school history.
Both had to overcome big challenges on their way.
Taylor’s came in the semifinal against Union’s Jack Thomsen, a returning state champion, where Taylor took a 3-2 ultimate tie-breaker in a very tightly contested match.
He opened with a pin of Jerret Delagardelle of Jesup (3:41) and advanced to the semis with a 13-2 major decision over Cayden Howland of Iowa Falls. He finished his undefeated season (52-0) with a 5-2 decision over Trestin Sales of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the championship.
Flynn entered the tournament ranked eighth and seeded seventh.
“Jax had a great tournament,” noted Solon Head Coach Blake Williams. “His confidence grew after each match. Jax showed a lot of guts throughout the tournament.”
An 8-3 decision over North Fayette’s Kale Rodgers placed Flynn in a quarterfinal matchup with second-ranked Mason Griffin of Emmetsburg, who had defeated Flynn earlier in the season, Williams said.
Flynn won in sudden victory, setting up a semifinal against top-ranked Jared Voss of West Delaware.
“Jax was beaten until the last 20 seconds when he got a reversal for the win,” Williams reported.
The 7-6 victory placed Flynn in the final against Spencer Mooberry of Osage, ranked second in the state.
“After falling behind early, Jax fought back to win an 8-4 decision,” Williams said. “Jax showed rankings and records don’t mean anything when the postseason starts. Jax believed in himself and he didn’t care what others thought.”
Solon sent six wrestlers to the individual tournament. Joining Taylor and Flynn were Zeb Gnida (152), Caleb Ebert (160), Seamus Poynton (182) and Gage Marty (195). Poynton and Marty each placed seventh for the Spartans.
Solon finished the tournament with 63 points, just behind third-place Centerville with 66. Osage was first with 85 points, with Union in second with 78.
“I was very proud of all of our state qualifiers. I thought they battled throughout the tournament,” Williams said. “Six state qualifiers, four of them earning a state medal, and two of them winning a state title and finishing fourth in the state as a team made for a great week.”
Both Poynton and Marty lost their opening round matches and had to battle back through the consolation brackets.
Poynton dropped a 9-4 decision to Cody Hall of Bondurant-Farrar, but followed it up with a 7-3 decision over Dylan Meiners of North Polk and a pin of Dylan Jeffers of Keokuk (3:34) before losing a close 1-0 decision to Jacob Reicks of NH/TV.
In the seventh-place match, he faced a familiar opponent– West Delaware’s
Jack Neuhaus.
“Seamus had previously lost to him four times over the past two seasons,” Williams explained. “Seamus showed a lot of grit and determination and scored the winning takedown with about 10 seconds left. What a great way to cap off an outstanding season and career.”
After being pinned by Dylan Winkel of Central Lyon, Marty picked up a 9-5 decision over Jack Sindlinger of Charles City and a pin of Mid-Prairie’s
Isaac Boucher (1:08).
In the seventh-place match, he held on for a 7-6 win against Algona’s Cole Lewis.
“Gage had a great tournament and beat some very tough opponents,” Williams observed. “Being only a sophomore, the sky is the limit for Gage. He is an example of what hard work can do. Last year he was a junior varsity wrestler and this year he is a state place-winner.”
Gnida opened the tournament with a pin of West Lyon’s Johnny Perez (3:03), but lost by fall to Tyler Brown of Winterset in the quarterfinal and dropped a 3-0 decision to Kristian Gunderson of Forest City in his consolation match.
“Although it didn’t end the way he wanted it to, Zeb has nothing to hang his head about,” Williams said. “He leaves the program as a three-time state qualifier and two-time state medalist. Zeb also owns the most career wins as a Solon wrestler ever with 164. I am very proud of Zeb and everything he has done for the program.”
Ebert had a very tough draw, Williams noted.
Kalen Meyer of Central Lyon knocked him to the consolations with a 15-0 technical fall, where he fell to Carson Johnson of Gilbert (technical fall, 19-3).
“Caleb improved a lot over the year and learned a lot being down at state,” Williams added. “I know he is looking forward to getting back to state next year and getting on the awards stand.”
Williams thanked the community for its support throughout the season.
“Thanks to everyone who made the trip down to Des Moines to cheer on our team and to those that watched on TV back home,” he said. “I am very proud of our entire program.”
