Trojans whack the Golden Eagles

West sweeps Wahlert, 13-3 and 6-5

DUBUQUE– Iowa City West High’s varsity baseball Trojans improved to 23-6 Monday, June 26, sweeping the Golden Eagles of Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, in Dubuque.
West took the opener, 13-3, with a pair of big innings. The Trojans put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second and had four in the sixth. One West High runner scored in the first and third innings and the Trojans added two in the fifth.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the third and once in the fourth.
The Trojans put up 18 hits from Nate Disterhoft (four, with one double and one triple), Izaya Ono-Fullard (three, with three RBIs), Connor McCaffery (two RBIs), Tony Comellas (two, one double), Jason Strunk (two, one triple), Dane Randall, Logan Sims and Braden Houston. McCaffery took the win with four innings on the mound. The senior gave up three hits and three earned runs, striking out six and walking one. Austin West spent two innings pitching, giving up one hit, no runs and striking out one.
Wahlert surprised West High with four runs in the bottom of the third inning of the nightcap for a 4-0 lead.
The Trojans finally scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth but trailed 4-2 going into the top of the seventh. A four-run effort gave West a 6-4 lead. However the Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the inning with one final run for the 6-5 Trojan win.
Strunk and Randall led the Trojans at the plate with three hits each, while Disterhoft, Ono-Fullard (double), Comellas, Sims, Jake Peterson and Teagen Bell all had one hit apiece for an even dozen total.
Houston pitched three innings giving up three hits and four runs (one earned) with a pair of strikeouts. Connor Greer took the win with three innings of work. Greer gave up one hit and struck out two.
Tyler Stern pitched one inning, giving up one hit and one run while striking out two and walking two.
West High extended their winning streak to seven games with the sweep after falling to Cedar Rapids Jefferson on June 19 in a doubleheader. That loss snapped a five-game winning streak, which followed a June 9 loss to rival City High. The Trojans’ only other losses came from West Des Moines-Valley, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Cedar Rapids Washington and Cedar Falls.
The Trojans are on the road at Waterloo West Friday, July 7, for a doubleheader and close out the regular season at home on Tuesday, July 11, when Davenport Central visits.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association assigned West to Class 4A Substate No. 6 along with Burlington, Davenport North, Davenport West, Muscatine and North Scott.
