Trojans split with the Knights

IC West drops first game, rallies back for nightcap win

IOWA CITY– Lose one, win one. That was the story Tuesday evening (June 25) for the West High Trojans baseball team as they split a non-conference doubleheader with the Knights from Davenport Assumption.
The Knights won the opener 6-4 with a five-run effort in the top of the seventh inning. The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning and the Trojans slowly built up a lead with a run in the second, fourth and sixth innings. The Trojans had seven hits and left 10 men stranded on base. The Knights put up ten hits and left nine men hanging.
Nate Boland, Devin Raffensperger and Reid Bonner all hit doubles, Bonner and Raffensperger also were credited with two RBIs each. Sam Scott pitched six and two thirds innings giving up five earned runs and eight hits. Scott struck out five and walked two. Greg Ludwig closed-out the game giving up one run and two hits with one strike out and one walk.
Charlie Stumpff’s Trojans knocked the Knights around pretty good in the nightcap, taking that contest 7-3. The West crew came out of the dugout swinging and put four runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. A pair of runs in the third and fourth added some insulation to the score and the Knights were held at bay until the top of the fifth inning when a run scored. West answered in-kind, holding a 7-1 lead. The Assumptionites added two more runs in the sixth, but were shutout in the seventh for the final.
Raffensperger and Ezra Reiners cleared the fence with homers, Bonner and Tyus Adkins both doubled and Raffensperger batted in three runs. Sam Searls, Nick Spiess, Collins Marine and Andrew Raymer shared pitching duties with three, two, one and one inning of work respectively.
Searls gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two, Spiess gave up a hit and a run while walking two and retiring one Knight. Marine gave up two hits and two runs, walked one and struck out one while Raymer struck out three Assumption batters.
The split gave West a 20-4 record as the No. 2 team in Class 4A, according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s week five rankings. Ankeny was the top-ranked team in the class. The Knights were ranked third in Class 3A.
The Trojans will face crosstown rival City High in the annual two-night doubleheader on Monday and Tuesday, July 8 and 9, with a 10th grade and varsity contest at City on Monday and a 10th grade and varsity battle at home Tuesday.
